In addition to your own school and district polices, try these:
- Have clearly developed, scaffolded unit and lesson plans.
- Make sure it is apparent to the students what they are supposed to be doing and how they are supposed to be doing it for each part of each activity.
- Have an activity or something that they know they are supposed to do as they walk into the classroom each day.
- Get to know your students as students and teenagers. What do they excel at?
- Set high expectations your students will rise to the occasion.
- Have an explicit classroom management plan - Do you have your kids sitting in groups? rows? How should they ask for help? Are they allowed to help one another?
- Have a clear grading policy. Let your students know how and when they will be graded.
- Maintain a good sense of humor. Be able to laugh with your students.
- Have good communication with your students' other teachers. Use them as support.
- Maintain communication with parents when appropriatefor good news and bad. Open the lines of communication.
